2022-23 Girls Bracket Predictions

Bailee Lange knocks down the jumper in Suburban Council play for Averill Park. The Warriors (Class A) are going for their ninth straight sectional crown this year.

Check out the latest bracket predictions using the updated Section2Basketball.com computer rankings. Every tournament takes into account each team’s current ranking and their current path to the title. Teams are broken down into 4 different categories based on their overall chance to win it all according to the rankings. They are as followed:

Each team is automatically classified into four categories based on their pre-tournament odds of winning their respective bracket. Here’s the key:

>= 25% chance to win= Favorite

>= 10% & < 25% chance to win= Contender

>= 5% & < 10% chance to win= Dark Horse

< 5% chance to win= Long Shot

Only 2 teams between both the girls and boys side have won a Sectional title, since I’ve been running the numbers the last 5+ years, that haven’t been classified as a “Favorite” or “Contender”. The 2017-18 Voorheesville girls team were considered a “Dark Horse” pre-tournament took home the crown as the #6 seed. Last year the Ichabod boys team won Class B as a #6 seed and a tournament “Dark Horse” accoriding to pre-tournament projections.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

Yes, #1 Albany and #2 Bethlehem. The Eagles beat Albany earlier in the season and have a slightly better chance to win the bracket, based on the current rankings and if the bracket goes as planned. Albany are the defending champs and will not go out quietly.

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

Yes. #4 Colonie and #5 Saratoga, both have experienced top players. They play each other in the quarter-final but the winner could knock off #1 Albany if they were to play them in the Semi-finals. Colonie just defeated Albany last week.

Additional thoughts:

#3 Shenendehowa is the wildcard in this bracket. If they find one perimeter player a night (Bri Carey, Kaleigh Montanez, or Gabby Stuart) to get hot from three point range they can easily shoot themselves into the final. If they aren’t shooting the ball well, they’ll have to rely on their pressure defense and manufacture some transition offense in the paint.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

Yes. Averill Park is the overwhelming favorite. The defending state champions have a slightly different cast of players this year but I almost think their defense is on par from that championship team. Bailee Lange is a lockdown perimeter defender and Taylor Holohan is one of the best players in the area capable of getting a triple double on any night. (Points, Rebounds, & Blocks). The Warriors are looking for their ninth straight sectional crown.

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

#4 Columbia and #5 Burnt Hills are Averill Park’s toughest tests on their side of the bracket. However they lost by 19 and 18 respectively when they played the Warriors earlier this season. The #4/#5 matchup between the Blue Devils and Spartans, if the seeds hold up, will be a fun watch.

Additional thoughts:

#2 Catholic Central has been great in the Colonial Council with their only league loss coming to the top seed in Class B, Albany Academy. They just beat a good Ichabod Crane team by 24 points in their last outing and have three players averaging double figure scoring. #3 Queensbury is playing their best basketball to close the season. They’ve won 9 of their last 11 with their only two losses coming to Saratoga (AA) in non-league contests.

The #8/#9 game between Mohonasen and Amsterdam should be a competitive contest.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

Yes. Albany Academy. They have only one loss on the season and it’s to a Class AA team outside of the section. The Bears captured their first Colonial Council title since joing the league, 14 years ago. Academy is the deepest team in the classification with four players averaging double figure scoring. Each night it seems to be a different player leading the charge.

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

#4 Schalmont and #6 Broadalbin Perth could win a couple of games and make it to the semi final round. Schalmont is led by Karissa Antoine and Broadalbin-Perth has a balanced attack.

Additional thoughts:

#2 Catskill and #3 Ichabod Crane played one of the top games of the year earlier in the season, in a non-league tilt, and are lined up to play again if the bracket goes as seeded. Janay Brantley (Catskill) and Carolina Williams (Ichabod Crane) are two of the top scorers in the area leading their teams. However, they do have good supporting players to help them when needed.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

Yes, Greenwich. The Witches are undefeated this season and are experienced, deep, and talented. They are looking to get back to the title as they lost in last year’s sectional final vs Duanesburg when Class C ran only one tournament. This year they are in Class CC and Duanesburg is Class C. They are both top seeds and are both heavy favorites to meet in the Class CC/C playoff to advance out of the section.

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

The numbers would suggest no. The #4/#5 game between Maple Hill and Voorheesville should be a close game but the winner of that will have to play Greenwich in the semi’s.

Additional thoughts:

#2 Mayfield has had a great season and is a team that is never out of any contest as they feature a couple of shooters in Cloey Dopp and Jaidyn Chest. #3 Corinth maded it to the semi-finals last year and have experience returning. A potential clash with Mayfield later in the tournament would be a tight affair.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

Duanesburg. The defending sectional champs and state final four team has three proven scorers returning for this run and are ready for a repeat. (Allison O’Hanlon, Hannah Mulhern and Alex Moses.)

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

Maybe. The winner of a good matchup between #3 Berne Knox vs #6 Warrensburg could potentially give #2 Whitehall a good game if they were to meet in the next round.

Additional thoughts:

The teams in this classification will have a hard time beating Duanesburg. Not to say there won’t be exciting games along the way but it will take an outlier performance for that to happen.

A few questions based on the numbers:

Are there any clear cut teams that are the favorite to win the title?

#3 Northville. The computer rankings have had the Falcons as the best team in Class D all season. When they’ve stepped up in classification, during their league season, their results have been slightly better than the top two seeds. Hailey Monroe is averaging over 20 points a contest, for Northville, and has some help with Hannah Hoffman averaging double digits.

Is there a team seeded #4 or below that could that could win a couple games, reach the final or win the classification?

#4 Hartford could win two games and get to the final with a chance of taking home the crown. They are led in scoring by Alawnah Dunda.

Additional thoughts:

#2 Bishop Gibbons has a win over Northville and are led by a couple of 16+ point scorers per game in Angelina Dietz and Mia Wylie. The top seed Salem finished the season at 15-5 and, while not the favorite in the rankings eyes, they shouldn’t be taken lightly as their only losses are playing up in classification.
